Tension is gripping Offa community in Kwara State after explosions rocked parts of the town late Thursday night, destroying properties and causing widespread fear. The blasts occurred hours after US President Donald Trump announced airstrikes against ISIS targets in northwest Nigeria, including Sokoto State, but authorities are yet to confirm any link between the two incidents.
No casualties have been reported as of Friday morning, and security agencies are investigating the explosions, which happened at two locations around midnight – near the Eid praying ground and Solid Worth Hotel. An undetonated explosive device was recovered at the second location, prompting security agencies to cordon off the areas.
A retired Nigerian Air Force engineer suggests the explosions might be linked to a missile “staging” event, where a spent fuel tank or booster is released during flight, rather than a direct attack on the community. The engineer explains that modern long-range munitions shed excess weight mid-flight, and Offa’s location aligns with the missile’s flight path.
The Offa Local Government chairman, Suleiman Olatunji Omituntun, visited the affected areas and urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, relying on credible sources for information.
