Justice Mohammed Umar fixed the date after Sowore was arraigned on two-count amended charge filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS) and pleaded not guilty to the counts.
Omoyele Sowore, a Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate, was arraigned on January 19, 2026, before Justice Mohammed Umar on a two-count amended charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS). Sowore pleaded not guilty to the charges, which stem from a tweet he posted on August 25, 2025, accusing President Bola Tinubu of lying about ending corruption in Nigeria.
The tweet, which read “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”, led to charges of cyberstalking under Section 24(1)(b) and 24(2)(a), (b), and (c) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.
Sowore’s counsel, Marshal Abubakar, requested more time to prepare for the defence, citing lack of witness testimonies, while the prosecution argued that they had provided sufficient evidence. Justice Umar adjourned the case to January 22, 2026, for a definite hearing
