The United Nations has expressed profound outrage and deep sorrow over the devastating loss of lives following a brutal suspected suicide bombing at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, Borno State. Nigeria’s Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Mohamed Fall, condemned the attack, stating it was a barbaric act of violence that targeted innocent worshippers during evening prayers, leaving several dead and scores injured.
“I am appalled and deeply saddened by the reported loss of life in a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, following a suspected suicide bombing attack,” Fall said. He joined Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, in strongly condemning this heinous attack on a place of worship.
Fall conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the Borno State Government, and the people of the state, wishing the injured a speedy recovery. He echoed the governor’s call for heightened vigilance and enhanced security measures, particularly during the festive period, emphasizing the need for urgent action to protect civilians.
The UN official noted that this attack is another grim reminder of the persistent and brutal violence in Borno State, citing previous attacks on civilians, including the September 5 massacre in Darajamal, Bama Local Government Area. He reiterated the UN’s call for all parties to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians, especially in places of worship.
